Blanche K . Bruce Mississippi Senator – 1875

Blanche K . Bruce was born into slavery . He was the son of his then master and of a slave woman , accounts of who she was are  unclear . History notes that when he was a child , he was made the servant of his white half – brother and was educated along with him .

History records that when his half – brother joined the Confederate army , Bruce left him and went to Missouri , there he started a school for African Americans / Blacks .

Sometime after that Bruce made his way to Ohio to finish his own education at Oberlin College . History records that after the civil war ended he started his life in public service as a sergeant – at – arms in the Mississippi Senate .

Not much was recorded for a while until a public record was found showing that he was appointed tax assessor in Bolivar County , Mississippi there he served two terms. In 1873 Bruce was urged to run for the Senate of the United States during that time two Senator seats were open .

Footnotes show that one was for a full term and one for a year . The last was the incompleted portion of Jefferson Davis’ term . On March 4 . 1875 Blanche K . Bruce was sworn into a full term for the 44th Congress . In 1881 Bruce’s term was complete , However in that same year he was appointed Registrar of the Treasury and later on twice Recorder of Deeds in Washington D . C .
