Famous African Americans In History pt . 1 Internet vol – 1
There are many Famous Africans Americans In History . Some are famous for sports , T V , Raido ect . However in this article / blog I would like to share with you a Famous African American In History by the name of Gordon Roger Parks .
Gordon Roger Parks was born in 1912 on a small farm in Scott , Kansas . History records that Parks moved to St. Paul , Minnesota in his teens . While still a teenager he worked as a waiter , lunber Jack , Piano player , band leader and semi – professional Basketball player .
In 1937 History notes that he moved to Chicago there after being influenced by artists at the South Side Community Art Center . He started his career in photography . Through his association with the Community Art Center he was provided a darkroom ( a place to develop film ) and latter on given a one man exhibit by the director of the gallery .
History records that as a result of this show / exhibit Parks won a Resenwald Fellowship , the first for photography . Sometime after that he was aknowleged by the Farm Security Administration and later on went to work for the OW I ‘ s overseas Division .
Gordon Parks was acclaimed one of the most versatile photographers during his time , winning awards and honors including Magazine photographer of the year in 1961 by the A . S . M . P . Also the Newhouse Award in photography from Syracuse University .
To add to his long list of awards History notes that he won News Picture of the year and many awards from the Art Directors Competition . While working as a photographer Parks had a host of assignments in every part of the world .
Parks considerd himself ” a week – end composer . ” As a musical composer Park’s wrote several musical compositions , including First Concerto for piano and orchestra , which was performed in 1953 and three piano sonatas , performed in Philadelphia in 1955 .
He also was a writer of note , having published a novel title ” The Learning Tree” , and one book on photography .
Parks wrote in an article ” A great photograph is as timeless as a great painting because it captures and records the world as we know it , ” Photography in itself can be as important as any pure art form , but it is immaterial whether it will ever be accepted as such , because its value will come through what it contributes to mankind rather than to the arts . ”
