History of Black History Month / Who Started Black History Month? Black History Month Information pt . 4 Internet Vol – 4
Today when we hear the fraze or term Black History Month not much thought is giving as to who started Black History Month.
History records that pioneering efforts where made by a host of people. Some of them where William Cooper Nell, William Still, William Wells Brown George Washington Williams and W. E. B. DuBois.
All of which wrote books on some aspects of Black History. However Carter G. Woodson is credited for starting Black History Month when he organized the Association for the study of Negro Life and History in 1915.
Carter G. Woodson was born in Canton, Virginia in 1875. He was born into unfavorable economical times, and did not complete high school until the age of 22. History notes that Carter . G Woodson worked as a coal miner and continued his education at Berea College in Kentucky also at the University of Chicago .
He finished his college studies with a Philosophy degree from Harvard in 1912. History notes that in 1926 he initiated the observance of Negro History week. Carter G . Woodson was also a teacher and wrote many Black History books. Soultic Magazine salutes Carter G . Woodson for being the Father of Black History.
