Augustus Tolton : First African American / Black Priest In America .
Augustus Tolton was born in Ralls County , Missouri . History records that he grew up in Quincy , Illinois ”, the place his mother had taken him after escaping from slavery . History notes that before Augustus reached his teens he went to work in a tobacco factory . Not much was mention about a wage but records kept during his tenure there show that he worked from sunrise to sunset .
His mother was noted to be a devout Catholic and much is noted about the fact that she made sure her son attended mass and confession . There Augustus Tolton caught the attention of the priests and bishops at St . Boniface’s Parish . Historical Footnotes kept by the Church note that they encoraged him in his studies and , when he was sure of his true vacation helped to secure his admission to the college of propaganda ( De Propaganda Fide ) at Rome in 1880 .
There he meet all the nessary requiements . History records that on Holy Saturday , April 24 , 1886 Augustus Tolton was ordained a priest . In that same yeasr Augustus Tolton offered Holy Mass on the High Alttar at St . Peter’s Basilica in Rome , Italy this must have been a very speical honor because as a rule only the Pope himself offers Mass over the tomb of St . Peter in this holy of holies of the Christian world .
It is now well noted that this was the Church’s way of honoring the first full- blooded African American / Black ever to be ordained for priesthood . Also in that year after returining back to Quincy , Illinois he was made Pastor of St . Joseph’s Catholic Church for [ Negroes – Dated ] Blacks / African Americans .
Records compiled by our research team show he had a very small church . Other sources of Information collected indicate that during that period of time Augustus Tolton fequently had coverage in news papers . Due to the fact he was the first Black / African American Priest in America .
Service instead of Publicity was evident , on his watch St . Monica’s was built in Chicago in the 2200 block of South Indiana Avenue . In 1890 St . Monica opened .
