Black History People/ Black History Timeline.pt-1 T. Thomas Fortune. Whats Behind The Name? By L.Long Jr
Black people used the term Afro – American in the 70s . Today the term is one that has been dropped from our vocabulary and replaced with African American . We very seldom hear of someone referencing our people as Afro American .
Little does the average African American even know where the term came from or it’s significance . T . Thomas Fortune first popularized the term . He was dubbed ” The Father of Afro American Journalism “” Fortune’s father was a very outspoken individual . It’s possible that Fortune’s father inspired him to devote his life to fighting the injustices of our people .
He was the most recognized African American Journalist and outspoke activist of his time . He joined forces with Booker T . Washington and many other activists to fight injustice of newly freed slaves . He started the National American Afro American League ;” Wage war on the inhumane treatment against newly freed slaves .
The word Afro American was given to freed slaves as a sense of identity . Unfortunately T . Thomas Fortune didn’t become as well known as his fellow activist .
SoulTic Magazine travles through our Black History Timeline to honor the legacy and life of T . Thomas Fortune . He was one of our many Black History People who forged the way for present journalist and activist of today.
